Black Cat (Felicia Hardy) is a character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by Marv Wolfman, Keith Pollard, and Dave Cockrum, the character first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #194 (July 1979).

Black Cat[]

Feeling reckless and enraged that she had been denied the opportunity to take the life of the man who had stolen her own, Hardy made the decision to use her newfound abilities to carry on her father’s legacy. Felicia was arrested, but her father’s mentor, the Black Fox, set her free from prison by accepting her as a new student. [11] Black Fox trained her alongside fellow thief Tamara Blake; while Blake was superior to Felicia, Black Fox preferred Hardy because Hardy truly enjoyed stealing and wasn’t in it for the money. [14] Felicia decided to take on a costume identity after amassing a fortune in stolen goods. Initially, she dressed as the Black Cat to free her father from prison. On the same night, she met Spider-Man. Felicia was attracted to this lone hero even though she didn’t like men. She eventually came to love Spider-Man because he was the first man she felt she could trust. [15].

In an inept attempt to win his love, Felicia kept up her Black Cat persona while she searched for a way to gain his trust. She was clever enough, though, to pretend to be mentally unstable when apprehended, ensuring that she was kept in a less secure facility. [16] Felicia initially consented to approach Spider-Man head-on after being freed, and the webslinger even had his force partner Captain DeWolff start drafting amnesty documents. But in an attempt to pull off one last major coup, the Black Cat tried to coerce Spider-Man into joining her in her life of crime. Felicia appeared to jump to her death rather than return to prison when he attempted to apprehend her once more. Ironically, not long after, Captain DeWolff showed up with the now-useless amnesty papers. [17].

Fresh Start[]

When the Thieves Guild, an illustrious group of criminals from antiquity, decided to make a comeback by pilfering superhero gear and equipment, Black Cat asked Spider-Man for help in locating and returning the stolen items because she thought it was essential to save innocent lives, even though she planned to keep some of the spoils. She was able to confront them and their leader, Odessa Drake, by infiltrating their hideout as a Guild member. [70] After Spider-Man was able to notify the superhero community of their whereabouts, the Thieves withdrew and their belongings were recovered. Later, Felicia and Spider-Man had a heart-to-heart conversation in which she revealed that her recent decline into villainy and mental instability was largely caused by the fact that, in addition to forgetting Spider-Man’s secret identity along with the rest of the world, she also lost all memories pertaining to his alter ego, a vital aspect of her life that she still treasured. In response, Spider-Man removed his mask in front of Felicia, reaffirming their friendship and disclosing his secret to her. [71].

Early Life[]

Before his arrest, Felicia Hardy’s father, Walter Hardy, a well-known cat burglar, urged her to never settle for less than the best. She should strive to become a basketball player rather than just a cheerleader, for instance, if she was passionate about the sport. [12].

She was saved from being almost sexually assaulted by a drunken student in a restroom during her first year of college by Ryan, another student. Ryan and Felicia grew close and spent a lot of time together until one evening when Ryan insisted that it was time for them to start dating. Felicias protests were in vain. She made the decision to kill her rapist despite the repercussions because she detested the thought of becoming a victim. She abandoned her studies to start training in acrobatics and different fighting techniques. She set out for vengeance after months of planning, but Ryan passed away in a drunk driving accident before she could locate him. [13].
