how to make cat beanie

Yarn: I’m using Red Heart Super Saver acrylic yarn. “Aran Fleck” is the color, and it is a 4 weight. ”.

We’re only going to use one stitch for this beginner project, which is the half double crochet. This is really my favorite stitch for beginner crochet projects. I actually wrote a post about it, which you can find here, if you’re curious as to why.

This is the simplest crochet hat for beginners to make, and it’s really adorable and entertaining. Because it’s just a rectangle that has been folded in half and slip stitched up the side and top, I believe it’s even simpler than my other beginner’s crochet hat. This one doesn’t involve any gathering; it’s just a minor adjustment that completely alters the hat. There isn’t a simpler method, in my opinion, to crochet a beanie.

Watch the video below for a more in depth step by step crochet tutorial. We also have a left handed version you can watch here.

One size fits most adults; this is an adult-sized hat. Nevertheless, you can adjust the length of this by adding stitches to the starting chain. Make extra rows if you want it to fit around a bigger or smaller head.

NOTE: Your work should be a little tighter than usual if you want the “ears” to be firm and hold their shape. Because of this, you may want to think about making an additional few stitches in your foundation chain to make sure it fits comfortably but snugly around your head!

This pattern is very easy to follow, perfect for beginners, and can be easily adjusted to fit a range of body sizes, from children to adults. It would also make wonderful gifts for your loved ones.

Alternatively, you can make a regular chain that fits around your head, slip stitch to join, and then make a double crochet in each chain if you are still having trouble with your foundation row. Either approach is acceptable, so choose the one that is most comfortable for you!

Continue adding more rows if you want your beanie to be longer or if you want to roll up the bottom to create a brim, like in the pictures of the pink beanie above. My pink beanie had a total of 26 rows.

FAQ

How much yarn do I need for a cat beanie?

This chunky ribbed cat ear beanie works up super quick and takes less than 150 yards of yarn to create. Designed by Alexis Middleton using Super Bulky Weight Yarn and an 8 mm (L) crochet hook.

How long does it take to crochet a cat beanie?

If familiar with the stitches, this make should not take any longer than two hours for an adult-size beanie. Remember, it’s bulky yarn so you are going to see results fast. I think the two-hour assessment is more than generous.
